HONG KONG, August 3, 2009 - PCCW Global, a subsidiary of Hong Kong’s premier telecommunications provider, PCCW Limited, has implemented a Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) solution for Middle East Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). The solution helps the pioneering Arabic broadcaster to transform its business by streamlining its communications infrastructure and extending their global reach in content distribution in the era of converged media broadcasting.
Replacing an expensive legacy of multiple connections, the MPLS solution ensures quality service and delivery by using a single converged, and fully resilient, IP network to carry content to many locations at a lower cost.
The solution provided will also ensure a secure and seamless connectivity infrastructure in a dynamic and complex business environment, providing reliable links for the various business groups within MBC from production material contribution to high definition video conferencing.
MBC will use the network to provide secure and reliable connectivity between MBC’s Dubai head office and its global branch offices for the transfer of data and video with the highest quality of service. MBC also intends to leverage the network to extend its global distribution of its wide array of Arabic content.
The alliance between MBC and PCCW Global will provide a considerable amount of synergy and advancement towards a cost effective and reliable mode of communication based on an entirely IP based network.
PCCW Global Chief Executive Officer Marc Halbfinger said: “MBC is an exciting addition to our media clientele in the Middle East. Our network professionals have worked intensively with MBC across the network development cycle – including planning, design, installation, and ongoing monitoring and management of the new MPLS network.”
He added: “We understand the demanding service level and high-class performance required by broadcast-quality TV. Service levels have been tailored specifically to the applications and traffic, and include aggressive thresholds for availability, packet loss, latency, and jitter.”
Amjad Edris, MBC Group Director of IT/Engineering, said: “MBC considers the collaboration with PCCW Global as a long term strategic alliance and we acknowledge the level of dedication and support that PCCW Global has provided towards the setup of a complex set of requirements geared towards maintaining MBC’s reputation as the leading Arabic broadcaster.”
MBC Group was established in 1991 as the first pan-Arab free-to-air satellite broadcasting company in the Arab World. Over the past 17 years, MBC group has grown to become a well-established media group that enriches people’s lives through information, interaction and entertainment. Based in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, MBC Group includes 7 television channels: MBC1 (general family entertainment), MBC2 and MBC MAX (24-hour movies), MBC3 (children’s entertainment), MBC4 (entertainment for new Arab women), MBC Action (action series and movies), and Al Arabiya (the 24-hour Arabic language news channel); two radio stations: MBC FM (Gulf music), and panorama fm (contemporary Arabic hit music); as well as O3 productions, a specialized documentary production unit, and Middle East News agency (MEN), a news gathering agency. MUMBAI / HONG KONG, June 24, 2009 - PCCW Global, a subsidiary of Hong Kong's premier telecommunications provider, PCCW Limited, today launched the TGN-Intra Asia Cable System (TGN-IA), the region’s first direct, point-to-point and express optical-fiber submarine cable interconnecting key PoPs in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore with branch extensions to the Philippines and Vietnam.
The TGN-IA, which landed in Hong Kong on March 16, 2009, is expected to be in operation by July 2009. PCCW Global is a significant stakeholder of this private cable initiated and operated by Tata Communications. With the planned cable landing in Vietnam in the third quarter of 2009, this 6,700 km-long TGN-IA cable network will become fully operational linking Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines.
This cable is strategically designed and routed to avoid earthquake zones and other potential natural calamity areas in the Asia-Pacific Region. With an aggregate bandwidth of 3.84 terabits per second and short round-trip-delay time, TGN-IA allows faster connectivity and reduces latency for customers. TGN-IA will also complement other regional cable systems, such as APCN-2 and RNAL, creating one of the most resilient Asian infrastructures, and will provide robust network solutions to customers and seamless interconnection with other major trans-oceanic cable networks linking the rest of the world.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Marc Halbfinger, Chief Executive Officer of PCCW Global, said: “We are proud to have ownership of the TGN-Intra Asia Cable System. This new cable will significantly increase our network’s capacity, providing our customers with greater flexibility and route diversity, and meeting the demand for Internet, TV broadcast, enterprise connectivity and applications, and all forms of data and voice services.”
The multi-terabit TGN-IA system increases data and voice reliability by providing new route diversity for traffic generated throughout and into the Asia Pacific region. PCCW Global and Tata Communications can jointly offer network services and other managed services into Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines, as well as meet the growing demand from Business Process Outsourcing customers by offering services and direct routes into or between India and the regions that TGN-IA connects.
Commenting on the launch of the TGN-IA cable, Vinod Kumar, President and Chief Operating Officer of Tata Communications, said “The TGN-IA cable system is an integral part of the growing Tata Global Network. When combined with our other wholly-owned and operated cable systems like TIC and the TGN-Pacific system, TGN-IA will complete Tata Communications’ multi-terabit capability from India to Asia and onward to the United States. We are proud to partner with PCCW Global on the TGN-IA system as it bolsters our common goal of continued growth and development within the Asia Pacific region.”

HONG KONG, March 30, 2009 - For the fourth consecutive year, PCCW Global Limited – a subsidiary of PCCW Limited, Hong Kong’s premier telecommunications provider and an Asian leader in Information & Communications Technologies – has been rated best in the “Best International Leased Lines” category of the Gartner “User Survey: International Carriers in Asia/Pacific, 2008“.
PCCW Global also took command of the “Best International Ethernet” category, thanks to top scores in reliability, performance, support, installation, repairs, options and pricing.
Leading global research and analysis firm Gartner Inc conducted the fifth end-user survey of international network service providers in Asia Pacific in the middle of 2008 to rate the quality of cross-border network services available in Asia Pacific. The objective was to help multinational corporations (MNCs) with regional network requirements to select the right service providers.
More than 400 multinational corporations participated in the survey, the majority of which were US and European organizations located in Asia Pacific. Some 43 per cent have networks connecting 10 or more countries in Asia, while 31 per cent spend US$3 million or more on telecoms every year.
The outcome of adjudication by MNC network managers underscored PCCW Global’s high performance as a result of mature processes, an excellent service culture and a constant focus on service improvements. PCCW Global’s efforts to improve local-access quality, especially in developing markets, also came to the fore. This had involved downtime analysis of all access circuits, with a sharp focus on those with long outages and repeat faults – all followed by tireless work with local carriers to identify and resolve problems to best-in-industry standards.
PCCW Global Chief Executive Officer Marc Halbfinger said: “Service excellence is of the utmost importance to PCCW Global – and we believe these survey results amount to clear endorsement of our consistent commitment to our customers and to service quality.”
The Gartner survey success adds to a growing record of recognition generated by PCCW Global. Accolades have included the coveted global “Best Managed Service” title in the World Communication Awards 2008, a scheme that rewards high standards of managed services. These encompass a wide range of offerings such as managing WANs and VPNs (including IP-VPN), as well as managed network services plus web hosting, web services and mobile enterprise solutions.
PCCW was the first service provider in Asia to achieve the industry-specific TL 9000 quality accreditation, as well as BS 7799 information security management quality certification, further reflecting PCCW Global’s commitment to service excellence.
